INTERNATIONAL SHARPS INJURY PREVENTION SOCIETY

September 6, 2002 Issue

Welcome to the ISIPS Newsletter

Every effort is made to check all links  prior to  publication. However, the constant part of the internet is change!

Where were you on Sept. 11?

On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four US planes. These planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania killing more than 3000 people in a matter of a few hours.   ISIPS  honors those that have passed on and offers our deepest sympathies to those that have been personally affected by the loss of family, friends, and colleagues. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all that have felt the trauma and know that our world will be forever changed by these events.

The American Red Cross has provided disaster assistance to people in need without charge. This is made possible by voluntary donations of time, money and blood from the American people.  As we remember the events of September 11, we encourage individuals and corporations to donate generously to the American Red Cross.  For more information please visit www.redcross.org  -The editor

SurGuard Needle Protection System

SurGuard needle protection system provides single-handed needle protection through a unique locking mechanism. After the injection is complete, you simply press the sheath over the needle, against a firm surface, until an audible click is heard. This indicates that the needle is now safely covered and locked. Users now have a choice of three formats: SurGuard sheath without needle (which requires assembly), SurGuard sheath with needle, and SurGuard combination, which includes the needle and syringe.

Safesite® Needle-free IV System

The SAFSITE IV System was introduced in 1989 and is the first truly needle-free IV system on the market. With use in over 800 facilities throughout the United States, the SAFSITE valve has provided a standard for proven needlestick injury protection for all healthcare workers. The SAFSITE Needle-free System is a two-way reflux valve that allows for the injection, gravity/pump flow, and aspiration or infusion of fluids or medications, including blood, blood products, lipids or TPN. SAFSITE is compatible with any standard Luer fitting and existing, standard IV equipment. SAFSITE offers a comprehensive product line for all IV applications. The SAFSITE reflux valve is a completely closed system, activated by attaching any standard Luer connection, such as a syringe or IV tubing. The valve closes automatically when the Luer taper is removed, reducing the risk of air embolisms or backflow.

VACUETTE® "SAFETY BLOOD COLLECTION SET"

World-wide every year there are over 1 million needlestick injuries officially reported. The unofficial count is probably substantially higher.

Greiner Bio-One has introduced the VACUETTE® “SAFETY BLOOD COLLECTION SET” that improves safety for blood collection personnel as well as increasing patient protection. Even when dealing with patients with difficult vein conditions, this product is a safer alternative to other conventional blood collection sets, it aims at simple handling and maximum flexibility. The vein puncture proceeds as normal and blood flashback is clearly seen through the translucent shield. However, following completion of the blood collection, the safety mechanism can be easily activated by pressing in both sides of the security lock. The translucent needle shield is then pulled over the cannula until it is locked in place. An audible click indicates that the safety mechanism has been correctly activated. The cannula is completely isolated and securely locked into a closed system. The needlestick risk is reduced to an absolute minimum.

There are three versions of the VACUETTE® “SAFETY BLOOD COLLECTION SET” available: · Standard version (without Luer adapter) – 21 or 23 G · Standard version (with Luer adapter) – 21 or 23 G · Version with Luer adapter + tube holder – 21 or 23 G

 Safety PICC Introducers

A PICC is a peripherally inserted central catheter.  A PICC is a radiopaque catheter designed to provide therapy to patients who need moderate to long-term infusion therapy (five days to one year.) A PIC catheter is inserted in the arm into the basilic, cephalic, or median cubital veins.

PICC's are typically placed by inserting a sharp needle introducer into the vein.  The needle is removed leaving the introducer in the vessel. The PIC catheter is then advanced through the introducer until the PICC tip is at the superior vena cava.   The introducer is then removed.

Using a standard introducer needle exposes a healthcare worker and others to unnecessary sharps injuries.

Newer technologies exist that can reduce these unnecessary injuries. The Safety Excalibur® Introducer, marketed exclusively by Bard Access Systems, Inc. is manufactured by TFX through an arrangement with Bio-Plexus, Inc.

The  Safety Excalibur® Introducer requires no change in insertion techniques. It's introducer  has a smooth transition for patient comfort. The clear flashback chamber provides visual confirmation of proper insertion.  The removable flashback plug allows syringe attachment for special procedures. The innovative self-blunting mechanism automatically blunts the needle tip as it is withdrawn from the patient. For more information on this product click here
