UniGuard is the first single use,
disposable safety pen needle remover. It has been designed to protect
the healthcare professional from potentially fatal needlestick injuries.

removed without the healthcare professional ever touching the needle
directly.
Unique:‘Push down’ entry to
avoid point-first recapping incidents.
Secure: Safety flap to
prevent back-end needlestick injuries and to prevent the removal of the
used needle.
Shielded: Protective wings
over finger grip area for extra protection.
Single Use: Protects
against cross contamination by using a new device for each needle.
Clear Indicators: Audible
click when the pen needle is seated correctly and when the hinged door

Nearly 17 percent of nurses who work in outpatient chemotherapy infusion centers reported being exposed on their skin or eyes to the toxic drugs they deliver, according to a study from the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. The study surveyed 1,339 oncology nurses from one state who did not work in inpatient hospital units. About 84 percent of chemotherapy is delivered in outpatient settings, largely by nurses. Results
appeaedr online in the journal
BMJ Quality and Safety. "Any unintentional exposure to the skin or eyes could be just as dangerous as a
needlestick," says lead study author Christopher
Friese, RN, PhD, assistant professor at the U-M School of Nursing. "We have minimized needle stick incidents so that they are rare events that elicit a robust response from administrators. Nurses go immediately for evaluation and prophylactic treatment. But we don't have that with chemotherapy exposure,"
Friese says.
How the infection prevention Grinch stole Christmas
At this time of the year, I usually risk Grinch-related epithets and write an article or blog post on facility safety concerns from holiday decorations. But I just came across an article on holiday decorations and infection control concerns from the land of Dickens, A Christmas Carol, and yes, Scrooge.
Safety culture,
while every staff member’s responsibility, has to be a big item for any
leader of a healthcare organization. And, as a subset of safety culture,
sharps safety is critical to protecting healthcare workers.
A free, five-minute video makes a compelling case for nurses to receive the influenza vaccination. The Immunization Action Coalition has selected “Nurse-to-Nurse Influenza Vaccine Safety Video” as its video of the week.
In the fight against hospital-acquired infections (HAI), hospitals are focusing on two sources of infections but not on the most common one, catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), according to researchers at University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) and the Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Healthcare Center and their study published in the December 6 Journal of General Internal Medicine.
Civil lawsuits against two San Diego hospitals for medical waste disposal violations have been settled, reports Waste & Recycling News, December 8. In separate settlements, “Scripps Health Hospital agreed to pay $272,870 in civil penalties and costs while Sharp Memorial Hospital agreed to pay $102,939 in penalties and costs,” according to the report.

Gaven Medical - Puncture-Guard Safety Winged Infusion Sets
With the Puncture-Guard, clinicians can minimize needlestick injuries from contaminated sharps. The unique design blunts the needle before removal from the patient, without changing the drawing procedure. The needle assembly features a hollow, blunt cannula within an otherwise standard needle. Insert the needle assembly into the patient with the blunt cannula in a retracted position.
At the end of the drawing procedure, but before the needle is removed from the patient, the blunt cannula is advanced and locked into place be yond the sharp tip of the outer needle. The Safety Feature (Blunt) is activated while the device is still in the patient's vein, eliminating the exposure to the sharp during those first few critical moments.
A truly one-handed activation method, allowing attention to the venipuncture site at all times.
