When the sample within a blood culture bottle is found to have a positive result, it is necessary to obtain samples from the bottle for further tests to ultimately identify the specific microorganism(s) and determine susceptibility to a range of antibiotics. This subculture process is typically done by using a needle and syringe or a venting needle. These processes pose the threat of accidental needlestick injury to the technologist at multiple stages in the procedure including

In each of these
steps a needle or sharp is exposed and an inadvertent
injury can occur. With distractions and heavy workloads, accidents

easily happen so it is wise to remove sharps from a medical
procedure
