Historically, the procedures for emptying a blood-filled control syringe in a cardiology catheter lab meant purging it into a bowl or basin on the table.  This often resulted in the splashing of blood on work surfaces, floors, and often co-workers.  OSHA has demanded that unnecessary exposure to bloodborne pathogens be removed from the work site.
