Engineering and work practice controls shall be used to eliminate or minimize employee exposure.
Laboratory Devices
Various laboratory devices are used by medical technologists and others in analyzing body fluids. Safety products have been designed to minimize sharps exposure to these workers.

Haemo-Diff Blood Smear

Mechanics of the Device:

Place the Haemo-Diff vertically onto the S-Monovette®, piercing the cap membrane.  Place the Haemo-Diff in a sloping position onto the slide to dispense a droplet of blood.  Use the Haemo-Diff’s smear edge to create a smear.

Sarstedt’s Haemo-Diff Blood Smear is designed specifically to work with the S-Monovette® Blood Collection System.  The unique device creates a blood droplet directly from the closed S-Monovette® tube and smears this droplet onto the slide.  This double function minimizes exposure to bloodborne pathogens and eliminates the need for additional products.

Safety Features and Benefits:

The Sarstedt Haemo-Diff minimizes exposure to bloodborne pathogens because opening of the tube is no longer required during slide preparation.  The dual-function device also saves time and material costs.

Tube Segment Opener

Insert a Tube Segment Opener into a labeled test tube.  Insert the tube segment into the opener at a slight angle and push in.  To dispense a small volume of blood, squeeze the end of the segment once.  To empty the segment, fold the segment and squeeze it.  For typing systems that require pipetting of micro sample volumes, invert the device and insert the tube segment from underneath.  Squeeze the segment until the opener’s reservoir is filled.  Pipette the required quantity.

Sarstedt’s Tube Segment Opener provides safe and easy access to blood bag tube segments.  The device helps to minimize the risk of cross-contamination between samples.  Options are available for both 10mm and 12mm diameter tubes, as well as a pre-assembled 12mm version.

The process of cutting segments with scissors puts healthcare workers at risk for exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
