Needlestick injuries are far too common hazard. Some hospitals report one third of nursing and laboratory staff suffer such injuries each year.
Closed-System Protective Devices
Specialized containers to place needles and other sharps into as mandated by law. In addition, these containers are used for chemotherapy waste products. An important part of treatment for cancer patients is the use of antineoplastic agents. Unfortunately, these agents have been associated with potential adverse health effects for the individuals who prepare, administer, and dispose of these medications. This is a major concern because there are more cancer patients than in the past, greater combinations of chemotherapeutic drugs are being used, more potent drugs are being used, and new procedures and settings have now been implemented. Often times the drugs used for chemotherapy have a similar structure or activity known to hazardous drugs.  Many of these drugs are carcinogenic, teratogenic, and can create reproductive and organ toxicity. Closed system protective devices can virtually eliminate any exposure of toxic drugs to healthcare workers, custodial staff, or waste management employees.

S-Monovette® Blood Collection System

Aspiration method:

The S-Monovette® and needle are assembled immediately prior to collection. After venipuncture, the plunger is withdrawn slowly until the tube is filled.

Vacuum method:

A vacuum is formed immediately prior to collection by locking the piston into the base of the S-Monovette® and breaking off the plunger. After the vein is punctured, the evacuated S-Monovette® is connected to the needle.

The S-Monovette® is an enclosed multiple-sampling blood collection system that utilizes either an aspiration or vacuum method of collection.  The aspiration method of collection virtually eliminates syringe draws and provides a closed connection for line draws.  The system includes tubes in a full range of volumes and additives, multi-sampling needles with pre-assembled holders, needle protection devices, and safety winged blood collection sets.

Safety Features and Benefits:

Using the S-Monovette® aspiration method of collection minimizes needlestick injuries by eliminating the practice of drawing blood from a vein or in-line system into a syringe and back sticking into a blood tube. The all-plastic screw cap tubes minimize breakage and the aerosol effect. The multi-sampling needles with pre-assembled holders are not reusable and prevent any risk of needlestick injury that may occur by unscrewing a contaminated needle from the holder.

Sarstedt’s Safety-Needle is designed specifically to work with the S-Monovette® Blood Collection System.  The Safety-Needle features a 3-pin locking mechanism and an integral holder, which eliminates the risk of infection associated with disassembling the needle and holder or re-using contaminated holders.

Safety Features and Benefits:

The Safety-Needle aids in preventing needlestick injuries by enclosing the needle immediately after use.  Its compact design is engineered to prevent unintentional contact with the contaminated back end of the needle.

Mechanics of the Device:

Perform venipuncture (bevel of the needle upside, yellow safety device right hand side) and carry out blood collection according to the user guidelines on the S-Monovette® packaging and institutional policy.

Remove the final S-Monovette® from the Safety-Needle and withdraw needle from vein.  Place the safety device on a stable, flat surface and press the needle gently down until it locks into the safety device with an audible “Click”.
